 Understanding IVDD in Dachshunds

As Dachshund owners, you may hear the term "IVDD" from time to time. 

While it is important to be informed, it is equally important not to panic. 

Many Dachshunds live long, happy lives and never experience serious back problems.

What is IVDD?

IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease) is a condition that can affect the discs between the bones of the spine. 

Because of their long backs and short legs, Dachshunds are more prone to developing IVDD than many other breeds.

Can IVDD Be Prevented?

There is no guaranteed way to prevent IVDD, but there are steps owners can take to help support their dog's spinal health:

Maintain a healthy weight.

Provide regular exercise.

Use ramps, when possible, for furniture and beds.

Avoid excessive jumping from high surfaces.

Keep your Dachshund fit and well-conditioned.

Even with the best care, IVDD can still occur, and it is not necessarily the result of something an owner did or did not do.

Signs to Watch For

Contact your veterinarian if you notice any of the following:

Reluctance to jump or climb stairs

Crying out in pain

Shaking or trembling

Weakness in the back legs

Difficulty walking

Changes in posture or movement

Early veterinary attention can make a significant difference in recovery.

IVDD Is Not a Death Sentence

One of the most important things for new Dachshund owners to understand is that an IVDD diagnosis is not automatically a 

reason for euthanasia. Many dogs recover successfully with:

Strict crate rest

Medications prescribed by a veterinarian

Physical rehabilitation

Surgery when recommended
