Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting time, but it is important to remember that moving from our home to yours is a 

big change for your puppy. Even the most confident puppy may take a few days to fully adjust to their new 

surroundings, routine, smells, and family members.

To help make the transition as smooth as possible, all Southern Doxies puppies go home with the puppy food 

they have been eating here. We strongly recommend keeping them on the same food for at least the first 

week or two after bringing them home. Sudden food changes can upset a puppy's sensitive digestive system 

and may cause diarrhea, stomach upset, or a decrease in appetite. If you wish to switch foods in the future, do so 

gradually by mixing small amounts of the new food with the current food over several days.

It is completely normal for a puppy to eat a little less during the first day or two in a new home. 

They have just left their littermates, familiar surroundings, and daily routine. 

While some puppies settle in immediately, others may need a little extra encouragement.

During this adjustment period:

Offer meals on a consistent schedule.

Make sure fresh water is always available.

Feed in a quiet area with minimal distractions.

Monitor food and water intake closely.

Give your puppy plenty of rest and reassurance.

Most puppies begin eating and drinking normally once they become comfortable in their new environment.

Young puppies have growing bodies and need regular nutrition throughout the day. It is important to make 

sure your puppy is eating and drinking consistently.

Watch for signs that your puppy is:

Eating at each meal.

Drinking water throughout the day.

Remaining active and playful.

Producing normal stools.

If your puppy refuses food for an extended period, seems unusually lethargic, or is not drinking water, contact your veterinarian.

 A Helpful Tip During the Transition
If your puppy seems hesitant to eat during the first few days at home, adding a small amount of canned puppy

 food from the same brand as their kibble can often encourage them to eat. The added aroma and softer texture make

 the food more appealing while keeping their diet consistent. Mix only a small amount with their regular puppy food 

and gradually reduce it as your puppy settles into their new routine and begins eating normally.

Remember, a temporary decrease in appetite can be normal during the adjustment period, and a small amount of canned 

puppy food from the same brand is often an effective way to encourage healthy eating habits while your puppy becomes 

comfortable in their new home.

Dachshunds should maintain a healthy body condition throughout their lives. Extra weight places additional stress on their long backs and joints, which can increase the risk of future health problems.

At the same time, puppies should never be intentionally underfed in an attempt to keep them small. 

Growing puppies need proper nutrition to support healthy development of their bones, muscles, organs, and immune systems.

The goal is steady, healthy growth, not rapid weight gain and not restricted growth.

Treats are wonderful training tools, but they should be given in moderation. 

Too many treats can quickly add extra calories and may cause your puppy to become picky about eating their regular food.

Choose puppy-safe treats and remember that their puppy food should remain the primary source of nutrition.
